Don’t ego

A person’s self-esteem or self-importance is known as their ego. It is very essential to our makeup. It will define who we are and how we interact with others. An athlete’s ego is a big part of their confidence and how they interact with their teammates and coaches.  Everybody has an ego. Ego has both positive and negative aspects. From a positive view point it can be that the person has a solid, healthy, and strong self- concept and displays it as confidence with humility. However, many times ego is associated with a person that is full of themselves and noted as arrogant and egotistical. To build a great team culture, it is important to emphasize the importance of maintaining humility, confidence and faith that are vital to the team’s health. Constant reminders to student athletes that they have been blessed with talent and opportunity is important. So, when they border on displaying the negative side of EGO, they are reminded that the acronym for EGO is Edging God Out. Arrogance, selfish behavior, entitlement all leads to a division or interruption in the process of building a team. Keep God in the center. As coaches we too have been blessed with the opportunity to share our skills and impact young student-athletes. We must remember that the opportunity we have been given carries with it a great deal of responsibility!
