Establishing Momentum

Where we lived in Virginia, there were railroad tracks close to our home and bordered the road that I traveled every day on my way to work. There were times that a train was at a standstill which caused me to think about how many engines it would take to break the inertia and get the train moving. The longer the train, the more locomotive engines that would be needed to get the train moving and gain speed. It would start out slow and gain speed as well as establishing momentum (mass x velocity). Then I began to think about when momentum is established how much more the train could run efficiently and perhaps shut the engines down because momentum was not only reducing the amount of power needed to keep the train moving at the desired speed, but it was using the energy more efficiently.

In a recent catastrophic occurrence in East Palestine, Ohio when a train derailed, and caught fire exposing deadly chemicals into the land, water, and air. The amount of damage that will affect this community is impossible to assess or imagine at this time. While watching the news, it was revealed on video that it was one railroad car that caused all of the other cars to derail!  Wow!!  One car caused all that trouble. Unbelievable, you never know how one decision or experience can change your life forever.

In a comparable way, I began to think about the momentum that it takes to be a great team. How many coaches and leaders are needed to create the momentum needed to reach the goals that they are trying to achieve? What are the components that contribute to the momentum that is needed? Once we get the momentum going in the direction aimed at to fulfilling the goals we have set, what can stop us?
